In the summer of 1960, AGIP – Azienda Generale Italiana Petroli, under the leadership of Enrico Mattei, discovered the first offshore natural gas field off the coast of Punta Marina at a depth of 1,500 meters.
Named Ravenna Mare III, it was the first offshore productive well in Europe and the Mediterranean. Drilling in the North Sea would only begin ten years later.
During this period, Ravenna became an integrated industrial hub, where alongside the AGIP district, the petrochemical complex ANIC (Azienda Nazionale Idrogenazione Combustibili), founded in 1953 and producing rubber and fertilizers, also developed. Gianfranco Magnani, son-in-law of Marino Rosetti and head of the company for several years, together with his right-hand man Medardo Ranieri, recognized the epochal transformation taking place in Ravenna at the time and foresaw the enormous development potential of the offshore energy business.
Rosetti Marino entered the offshore sector with the construction of metal structures (jackets and decks) for the newly established steel islands, giving its significant contribution to the industrial development that Enrico Mattei had envisioned for Ravenna.
