Technology and Innovation in Rosetti Group

Rosetti pursues an ‘open innovation’ policy based on co-operations with technology partners who are developing promising innovations. Our focus is on scaling-up R&D results in pilot- and demonstration plants, in order to bring innovative technologies to industrial and commercial maturity. Rosetti is offering first class industrial development know-how and technological competencies as well as qualified intra-group resources in Engineering, Automation&Control, Construction and Marketing. Acting as development and licensing partner Rosetti has given significant impulses to industrialization and commercialisation of new technologies, as well as to a reduction of development risks and ‘time to market’.

Hydrogen and low-carbon clean energy
In the last few years Rosetti Group has focussed its innovation and development activities on hydrogen and low-carbon clean energy technologies with several development projects in the pre-industrial stage and early commercialization phase.

New multifuel technology for hydrogen production

Rosetti is worldwide licensor of ENI’s hydrogen technology (SCT-CPO - Short Contact Time Catalytic Partial Oxidation) and has participated the industrialization of this process. The technology is featured by an ultra-high-speed catalytic reaction with contact times 1.000-10.000 times shorter than those of conventional catalytic processes.  The SCT-CPO process can produce hydrogen from a variety of liquid and gaseous feedstocks including natural gas, GPL, light hydrocarbons and bio-derived organic compounds. It offers several advantages over the traditional SMR such as fuel flexibility, significant space and cost reductions and reduced CO2 emissions by easy recovery of CO2 from the compressed product gas. The technology has been successfully tested in two industrial pilot plants and is presently considered – besides refinery applications - for clean power generation in hydrogen turbogas power plants.

New technology for decarbonisation of natural gas (prior to its use)

In cooperation with Atlantic Hydrogen, Canada, Rosetti is developing a unique technology, which removes carbon from natural gas prior to its use (as alternative to CO2 capture and sequestration after combustion). Carbon is separated prior to combustion in form of solid carbon powder, thus avoiding all problems related to CO2 sequestration. The technology produces a ‘low-carbon natural gas’ which can substitute natural gas in prime movers (motors and turbines) as well as in city-gas networks (supplied as ‘green natural gas’) reducing GHG emissions.  The process is emission free: solid carbon removed upfront as carbon black is a valuable product for the chemical industry. The technology is in an early commercialisation phase and is presently considered for reducing carbon footprint of stationary natural gas based power applications and sustainable transport (CNG).
